Please contact Skating Director Jill Mintz-Hodyl at jillmintz@gmail.com or (651) 208-9125 if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Absolutely! Adults of all skill levels are welcome. We group adults together to work with a coach and learn new skills in a fun environment.
We welcome all new skaters at our Learn to Skate general sessions. Groups are assigned on the ice. Beginners skate with other beginners. Many parents arrange one or two private lessons to help their child build confidence before joining a group. You can call or email us to schedule those at any time.
Learn to Skate groups may be as large as 12 or as small as 3, depending on the session. Weekday and summer sessions often have smaller groups. We give personal attention to each skater regardless of group size.
Group lessons focus on having fun and building the basic skills that are common to all ice skating (recreational, hockey, and figure skating). For skaters who want to develop in a specific area, we recommend scheduling a private lesson.
Our rink is very cold because it is also used for hockey. Please dress yourself and your child as you would for 30-40 degree outdoor weather. At minimum this should include warm waterproof mittens, parka, socks that are at least calf-high, and a helmet. For younger skaters, we also recommend snow-pants.
We strongly recommend helmets for all skaters. Ski or skateboard helmets are best, but bike helmets also work well. Unfortunately, helmet rentals are not available.
Skate rental is available at the rink. Lesson rentals currently are $3.00 per skater.
Skaters of all ages and skating abilities are welcome to take private figure skating or hockey skills lessons. Taking private lessons from our team of skilled professionals will allow you to improve your skating skills at your own pace. We are here to help you achieve your goals!
Scheduling a Private Lesson
All private lessons are scheduled in advance through Jill Mintz-Hodyl with one of our Lace’Em Up Team Coaches. Private lessons are $90/hr. The private lesson fee does not include ice time. We schedule 30- or 60-minute lessons. Before scheduling your private lessons, please go to https://www.bigbearice.com and set up an account on the Big Bear Website. Login and book your freestyle ice time in advance prior to scheduling a private lesson. All private lessons must be done in your own figure skates. No hockey skates or rental skates allowed during a private lesson scheduled on freestyle ice.
Practice Time
We highly encourage all of our skaters to spend time practicing outside of class to continue building skills. Check out the public session’s days and time on the Big Bear Website to reserve your public sessions or freestyle ice time. Go to https://www.bigbearice.com.
