Lace’Em Up Skating proudly utilizes the Learn to Skate USA program, endorsed by USA Hockey, US Figure Skating and US Speedskating. We teach everything from basic fundamentals to advanced skating skills.
Our Learn to Skate classes are the foundation for recreational and competitive skaters wishing to pursue hockey, figure skating or skating for enjoyment with friends and family.
We offer several lesson formats to ensure each skater can progress at their own pace.
Lace'Em Up Skating offers Learn to Skate at Big Bear Ice Arena for all ages and abilities. Our Learn To Skate curriculum is offered in 60 minute lessons, Friday and Saturday.
Skaters earn level certification through a final skills test at the end of each session. Classes are offered weekly during multiple sessions in the year. Each session runs for 4 weeks. You are welcome to sign up for a 4 session package or drop in weekly. We will offer testing every four weeks.
Our 60 minute Learn to Skate lessons take place Friday & Saturday each week.
Advanced Skate sessions are offered on Friday & Saturday.
Lesson times vary slightly day-to-day, so be sure to check our updated calendar for accurate lesson times.

Please dress your skater appropriately for the conditions inside the ice arena - it can be cold. Layers are best, snow pants are encouraged, gloves or mittens are a must and helmets are required (scooter, bike or skateboard helmets are fine). If your child does not have a helmet that fits, there are some for loan at the rink.
Before taking the ice our certified coaches will check each student for good skate fit and proper lacing.
Students will also learn the basics of skating posture and balance, how to safely fall down and get back up on their own, and marching.
Once students are comfortable in their equipment, they will be taken onto the ice and be taught all the same things on the ice. Our coaches use games and other techniques so students have fun skating while building confidence and skating skills along the way.
If you have any questions about Snow Plow Sam lessons, please contact us.
Introductory Snow Plow Sam lessons are offered for 30 minutes prior to standard Learn to Skate lessons.
Please check the calendar for up-to-date lesson times.
Please contact Skating Director Jill Mintz-Hodyl at jillmintz@gmail.com or (651) 208-9125 if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Absolutely! Adults of all skill levels are welcome. We group adults together to work with a coach and learn new skills in a fun environment.
We welcome all new skaters at our Learn to Skate general sessions. Groups are assigned on the ice. Beginners skate with other beginners. Many parents arrange one or two private lessons to help their child build confidence before joining a group. You can call or email us to schedule those at any time.
Learn to Skate groups may be as large as 12 or as small as 3, depending on the session. Weekday and summer sessions often have smaller groups. We give personal attention to each skater regardless of group size.
Group lessons focus on having fun and building the basic skills that are common to all ice skating (recreational, hockey, and figure skating). For skaters who want to develop in a specific area, we recommend scheduling a private lesson.
Our rink is very cold because it is also used for hockey. Please dress yourself and your child as you would for 30-40 degree outdoor weather. At minimum this should include warm waterproof mittens, parka, socks that are at least calf-high, and a helmet. For younger skaters, we also recommend snow-pants.
We strongly recommend helmets for all skaters. Ski or skateboard helmets are best, but bike helmets also work well. Unfortunately, helmet rentals are not available.
Skate rental is available at the rink. Lesson rentals currently are $5.00 per skater.
Skaters of all ages and skating abilities are welcome to take private figure skating or hockey skills lessons. Taking private lessons from our team of skilled professionals will allow you to improve your skating skills at your own pace. We are here to help you achieve your goals!
Scheduling a Private Lesson
All private lessons are scheduled in advance through Jill Mintz-Hodyl with one of our Lace’Em Up Team Coaches. Private lessons are $55 per 30-minute lesson and $110 per 60-minute lesson. The private lesson fee does not include ice time. We schedule 30 and 60-minute lessons. Before scheduling your private lessons, please go to https://www.bigbearice.com and set up an account on the Big Bear Website. Login and book your freestyle ice time in advance prior to scheduling a private lesson. All private lessons must be done in your own figure skates. No hockey skates or rental skates allowed during a private lesson scheduled on freestyle ice.
Practice Time
We highly encourage all of our skaters to spend time practicing outside of class to continue building skills. Check out the public session’s days and time on the Big Bear Website to reserve your public sessions or freestyle ice time. Go to https://www.bigbearice.com.
